Abstract
773,168. Glass manufacture. DICHTER, J. June 2, 1955 [June 5, 1954; May 18, 1955], No. 15861/55. Class 56 A machine of the kind described in Specification 18074/11 [Class 56] for making small glass bottles or the like from glass tubes wherein the glass tubes are held vertically in first chucks which rotate on their own axes and also about the centre of an orbit, the bottle necks being formed at the lower ends of the tubes before the bottles are separated from the tubes by a vertically movable second chuck, is characterized by a number of second chucks being arranged to move in a closed path which contacts with the closed path of the first chucks at the point of separation. In Fig. 1, the chucks 5 ,are mounted on an intermittently rotating table 4 and are rotated on their own axes by the engagement of a toothed wheel 7 with pinions 6. In a modification, a clutch 13, cam-actuated by a lever 13<SP>1</SP>, is interposed so that, when desired, the spinning of the chuck is stopped. The table is rotated to move the chucks 5 from station to station, by a disc 14 carying rollers 15 which engage a rotating cam 16. In the first station the glass tube is gripped by vertically reciprocable tongs which pull it downwards through the chuck 5 to present a length of tube to be made into the bottle. The tube is then moved in succession 'through stations in which 'the lower end :is heated and opened by a mandrel 48 which may have transverse motions, and then shaped to form a bottle neck, by rollers acting externally on the tube against mandrels projected upwardly into the tube. The shaping means may produce a screw on the bottle neck. The second chucks 20 are rotated individually and bodily in the same way as the chucks 5, the rollers 24 on the disc 23 being engaged by the cam 25. Each chuck, at the separation point, is lifted and lowered by a cam 37 which swings a toothed quadrant 36 which raises a rack bar-34 through a pinion 35. The tubes, having been pre-heated on the zone of separation, are now heated by a burner 55 and the chuck 20 is closed by means 67. The bottle bottom forms itsself on the bottle piece as this is drawn away by the descending chuck 20. The burner 55 may be so adjusted that no bottom is formed on the lower end of the tube which is, however, thickened. Alternatively the separation of the bottle piece may be effected by a cool cutting tool, or if open vessels are being made the separation point may be notched the vessel then being broken off by a hot flame and, if necessary, by contact with a cold tool. The formation of a bottom on the separated piece may also be prevented by heating a narrow area at the separation point, and exerting a strong pull by the chuck 20. When a bottom is formed on the.separated piece, it may be shaped by contacting it with a plate 60, reciprocable on guide rods 63, and spring rollers 58, 59. Air is blown into the bottle, during the bottom shaping, through a tube 62. Alternatively', the bottle piece is enclosed, above the chuck 20, in a mould and is blown, a perforated member 68 supporting the bottom prior to blowing.
