Abstract
772,862. Electrodialysis. IONICS, Inc. July 10, 1953 [.July 18, 1952], No. 19043/55. Divided out of 772,861. Class 41. A method of treating an electrolytic solution to effect migration of ions from the solution to another solution across selectively ion-permeable membranes disposed face to face and alternately cationic and anionic which separate the solutions, a direct electric current being passed through the solutions and membranes, comprises forcing the first solution to follow a confined, tortuous path or paths which is or are in contact with the membranes. A concentrating and diluting unit comprises two anionpermeable membranes 226, 228, and cationpermeable membranes 238, 220, 222, 224, 240 with insulating sheet spacers 242, 230, 232, 234, 236, 244 positioned between adjacent membranes. Thus two dilution chambers, corresponding to spacers 230, 234, and two concentration chambers, corresponding to spacers 232, 236 are formed. Washing chambers are defined by spacers 242, 244 and communicate with ducts 256, 258 and 268, 270 in end plates 246, 248 respectively. The membranes have corner ports where shown to provide a path for a concentration stream from a duct 260, through the chambers 232, 236 in parallel, and out from a channel 320 in spacer 236 to a duct 272. The dilution stream similarly flows from a duct 262, in parallel through chambers 230, 234 to a channel 296 in spacer 234, and to an outlet 274. Cellulose tape 325 may strengthen the tortuous channels, which may take various shapes, e.g. spiral or sinuous. Electrodes, e.g. cathode 252, are positioned in recesses in the plates 246, 248. Two or more tortuous channels may be formed on each spacer, e.g. independent channels each confined to one half of the spacer.
