Abstract
770,341. Hypodermic injection apparatus. DUNMIRE, R. P. Nov. 18, 1954, No. 33441/54. Class 81(2) A hypodermic syringe comprises a fluid reservoir having a thin collapsible side wall inerging into a thicker rigid end wall and closed at its opposite end by a flat end wall, a hypodermic needle disposed entirely within the reservoir with its butt end against the rigid end wall and its outlet end directed towards the flat end wall and a passage leading from the reservoir into the needle at its butt end, the flat end wall being sufficiently thin to be penetrated by the needle when the side wall of the reservoir is collapsed by forcing the end walls towards one another. The syringe is in the form of an inverted cup 1, Fig. 2, for injection fluid, is closed at the lower end by a thin wall 2 and has a thicks top wall 4 in which the butt end of a needle 10 is mounted. Channels 14 in the top wall 4 and cut-away portions 13 in the needle 10 connect the interior of the cup with the interior of the needle. A diaphragm 17 separates the interior of the cup 1 from the channels 14. The centre portion of the thin bottom wall 2 is covered on the outside by a layer 18 of soft rubber or polyvinyl butyral and antiseptic ointment is located between the layer 18 and a layer 21 of fabric or plastic material having a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating and applied across the bottom of the syringe. In use, the fabric layer 21 is removed and the antiseptic 19 applied to the skin. The syringe is placed against the skin and the top wall 4 pressed against the bottom wall 2 so that the diaphragm 17 is ruptured, the needle 10 punctures the bottom of the syringe and the body tissues and injection fluid enters the tissues. After completing the injection, the fabric layer 21, which may carry information concerning the nature of the injection, is anplied to the skin. In a modification, similar syringes 80a, Fig. 8, are inserted in each end of an applicator. Each syringe comprises a thin bellows-like aluminium shell 90 and.. is closed at one end bv an aluminium disc 81 having a boss 82 holding a hypodermic needle 94. At the other end is an aluminium member 83 which may be readily pierced by the needle 94. A well 84 in the member 83 contains an antiseptic fluid 86 which preferably contains a suitable dye. The applicator comprises a tubular centre section, which houses a plunger 67 operable by projecting fins 68, and two end sections which house the syringes 80a. A cap 71 having an axial opening 74 closes each end of the applicator. In use, one of the end caps 71 is placed against the body and the plunger 67 is moved against the appropriate syringe 80a. The lower part of the syringe is pierced by prongs 77 so that antiseptic 86 can fall upon the skin. Continued movement of the plunger 67 causes the needle 94 to pierce the aluminium member 83 and the tissues and injection fluid is expelled from the syringe 80a. The syringe 80a may be coated with a layer of impervious plastic material.'
