778,971. Motor vehicle driving gear. RUSHWORTH, W. Dec. 7, 1955 [April 1, 1955], No. 9493/55. Class 79(2). [Also in Group XXIV] In a vehicle wherein differential gearing is provided by a lost motion coupling at each end of a rear axle 11, each coupling comprises a driving or driven member 12 having a spiral track 14 engaged by a dog 15 which is radially slidable in a driven or driving member 13, the spiral track preferably having more than two convolutions. As shown the member 12 is keyed to the axle 11 while the member 13 is rotatable thereon and has a road wheel (not shown), bolted thereto. The arcuate dog 15 may be replaced by a ball engaging a track of semi-circular cross-section. The axle 11 may be chain-driven.
