Abstract
777,520. Steering vehicles. ACF INDUSTRIES, Inc. May 4, 1955, No. 12913/55. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] In a two-axled railway car having radius rods 20 connected to the ends of an axle 10, the rods 20 are connected to a coupler 24 whereby the wheels 11 on the axle are maintained tangential to the track rails. As shown the ends of each axle are connected through resilient connections 21 and the rods 20 to pivots 22a on hangers 22. Each axle is suspended from the railway car body U by spring telescopic struts 14 and by a pair of spring cylinders 18. The coupler 24 at each end of the car comprises a coupler head secured to a hollow shank 25 slidable on a tongue 26 pivoted at 23 to the body U. The head is received in a carrier 32 with freedom for vertical movement, the carrier 32 being pivotally connected at its ends to draft links 33 of conventional draft gear 41. Secured to the pivots 22a are links 45 interconnected at their inner ends by levers 46 pivoted at 48 to the body U, whereby pivotal movement of the coupler head about the pivot 23 due to relative movement of the preceding vehicle causes deflection of the axles 10 of the vehicle to maintain the wheels 11 tangential to the rail curve. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the links 45 and levers 46 are replaced by crossed links.
