Abstract

<PICT:0777197/IV(a)/1> In a process for the polymerization of ethylene alone or with e.g. propylene, styrene and acrylic esters, under high pressure, e.g. between 800 and 4000 atmospheres and at 40 DEG to 400 DEG C., using an oxygen catalyst, the gas mixture separated from the main part of the polymer is fractionally cooled at temperatures adjusted in the different stages to temperatures above the flow point of the condensed polymer. In a continuous process, after compression in 1 and 2, reaction in 4 and separation in 6, the gas is led through a multi-stage, preferably three-stage, cooling zone at a pressure between 50 and 500 atmospheres comprising a plurality of pipes fitted with cooling jackets 8 and collectors 9 and the purified ethylene is recycled to compressor 2. In an example using a three-stage collector, the polyethylenes collected have molecular weights above 6000, between 1000 and 6000 with melting points between 85 DEG C. and 95 DEG C., and are liquid respectively.
