Abstract
776,174. Impregnating-compositions for electric insulation. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1955 [Aug. 27, 1954], No. 24966/54. Class 140. A micro-crystalline petroleum wax-impregnating compound for use in electric cables includes one or more synthetic waxes, each of which is either a hydrocarbon wax or a wax of a glyceryl nature and has a melting point between 85‹ and 150‹ C. and a power factor within the range 0.005-0.2 at 100‹ C. when measured at 50 c/s. and a stress of 8 kv/cm. The compound preferably contains from 1-40 per cent by weight of the synthetic wax and may also contain a low dielectric loss synthetic hydrocarbon wax having a power factor not greater than 0.005 and a melting point between 85‹ and 120‹ C. The synthetic hydrocarbon waxes may comprise a synthetic micro-crystalline wax obtained by the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide in accordance with the Fischer- Tropsch synthesis and having a melting point of 108-110‹ C. and an average molecular weight of about 600, or may comprise a polyethylene wax having a melting point of about 110‹ C. and a molecular weight of 2000-6000. The synthetic wax of a glyceryl nature may have a melting point of 94-97 C. or 140-143‹ C. The compound may also include, as one of its major ingredients, cable impregnating mineral oil and minor proportions of one or more plasticizers, anti-oxidants and metal sequestrators.
