Abstract

775,473. Free or semi-free piston gas generators. SOC. D'ETUDES ET DE PARTICIPATIONS EAU, GAZ, ELECTRICITE, ENERGIE SOC. ANON. Jan. 21, 1954 [Jan. 30, 1953], No. 1895/54. Class 7 (1). In a free-piston or semi-free piston gasgenerator including an internal combustion power portion working preferably on the twostroke cycle and according to the Diesel principle and a piston compressor portion driven by the power portion and serving to compress air at least most of this air and generally the whole of this air serving for feeding and scavenging of the power portion, air compressed in the piston compressor portion during an inward stroke of the piston is discharged before the completion of the inward stroke through a valve in a partition separating the compressor portion from a reservoir immediately into the reservoir the reservoir being constituted by a part of the casing of the gas generator surrounding at least partially the power portion and lying immediately adjacent the compressor portion at least a portion of the compressed air in the reservoir being subsequently forced to flow over and in contact with cooling means traversed by a cooling liquid and disposed within the reservoir or within a space connected with the reservoir. In Fig. 1 the cooling is effected by cooling liquid for instance water in a jacket 12 and coil 12a. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which cooling liquid flows through a coil 15. In Fig. 3 valves 18, 19 are provided and air flows in the direction of the arrows. In a modification of Fig. 3 the valves are deleted and a fan is provided in the space 17 to circulate the air. The speed of the fan may be adjustable. In Fig. 5 a cooling coil 23 is employed. The cooling effect may be adjusted by providing a by-pass conduit extending between the two generators and fitted with a shutter or valve. The compressor portion may discharge compressed air during the outward stroke the cooling means being in the conduit conveying air to the casing. The invention is applicable to the case where a stream of cold air coming from an additional blower and driven for instance by a secondary turbine would be blown into the casing. Fuel is injected into the cylinder 1 by means of one or several injectors not shown.
