Abstract
774,425. Gas-turbine plant. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Oct. 13, 1955 [Oct. 14, 1954], No. 29664/54. Class 110 (3). In a gas-turbine engine, a heat exchanger in which water is converted into steam, is disposed in the exhaust duct, the steam passing to a ring of steam nozzles each ejecting steam between the nozzle guide vanes of the first turbine stage. The engine shown comprises a shaft 1 on which are mounted a centrifugal compressor 2 and two turbine rotor discs 3, 4, an annular combustion chamber 5 being disposed between the compressor and turbine. The exhaust gases pass through the duct 9 in which is disposed a steam generator coil 10, the steam passing to a ring manifold 11 and thence through pipes 12 to nozzles 13 which are mounted between pairs of nozzle guide vanes 6. The steam serves to cool the turbine blades and to increase the mass flow through the turbine. The invention is also applicable to gas-turbine engines of the type having a separate power turbine; also to engines having an axialflow compressor in place of the centrifugal compressor shown; also to engines having a plurality of combustion chambers in place of the single annular chamber shown.
