Abstract
761,325. Welding by fusion. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd. Nov. 10, 1954, No. 32483/54. Class 83 (4). A holder 1 for welding electrodes 13 comprises a tubular gripper of conducting metal with a bore 10 closely to engage the electrode, there being a number of slits 12 to impart resiliency. The slits may be formed by sawing, milling or die-casting and they may be helical. Preferably, the slits terminate as shown so that the end of the gripper does not tend to spread open. Alternatively, a ring or other retaining device may be applied to the end of the gripper. The bore 10 communicates with larger bores 7 and 11 and the gripper is secured by a screwed boss 4 to an electrical contact member 5 carried by a part 6 of a welding machine. The gripper may, alternatively, be flanged for bolting to the machine or it may be clamped or screwed into a tapped bore. If desired, it may be insulated from the machine frame and directly connected to the supply cable. The holder is intended for use with " continuous " electrodes.
