Class 100(2) A clamping device for securing a thin flexible printing plate on the periphery of a printing cylinder comprises a support upon which the plate is positioned and a clamping member urged magnetically towards the support for wedging the plate thereagainst. As shown in Fig. 3 the cylinder 10 is formed with an axially extending slot 15 in which is mounted a channel-like support 21 secured to which is an elongated anvil bar 23 having an inwardly curved plate supporting surface 27. A plurality of C-shaped clamping members 30 are pivoted in slots 34 in the anvil 23. Each clamp 30 is made of magnetizable material and are urged into plate clamping position a series of axially spaced permanent magnet$40 positioned in the anvil 23. The clamping end of each member 30 is bevelled to provide an entrance angle 41 for a plate A which may be inserted through a suitably aligned guide 59. In a modification (Fig. 8) the anvil bar is replaced by a support 60 having a plate supporting surface 27, and the clamps 62 are formed with downwardly extending legs 64 co-operating with 5 permanent magnets 40a mounted in an elongated bar 63 secured to the support 60. In a further embodiment (Fig. 12) the cylinder 10 is provided with a channellike support 71 in the slot 15 the inner face 75 of the leg 76 of the support 71 forming an anvil against which the plate is clamped by individually movable, spaced clamping magnets 80. The magnets 80 comprise small cylinders and are spaced apart by similarly' shaped members 81 made of non-magnetic material. The magnets are retained in the channel 71 by an elongated bar 85 of magnetic material having a cam surface 87 against which the magnets 80 are held so as to clamp the plate against the leg 76 of the support 71.
