[Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic core for saturable inductors, magnetic amplifiers or like controllable devices has a portion which is of reduced cross-section compared with the remainder of the core. The core at this part may be of smaller dimensions or, if the core is laminated, the parts of some of the laminations may be omitted. In this latter case the core may be built up of two kinds of laminations each kind having different magnetic properties, one kind, having a rectangular hysteresis loop, forming the part having the reduced cross-section whilst both kinds form the remaining portions of the core. The other kind of lamination has a normal type of hysteresis loop. The core may also be constructed of magnetic ferrites in which case the part of the core with a reduced cross-section may be in the form of a tapered pin which is inserted after the coil windings have been assembled with the main part of the core. In another embodiment the magnetic properties of the core portion having the reduced cross-section may be further varied by mechanically applying pressure thereto, and further the laminations not forming the part having a reduced cross-section may be slotted in the flux direction.
