[Also in Group XVII] In a machine for filling and closing bags (see Group XVII) the bags are conveyed in opensided moulds 13 on an endless chain 21 which carries them over a vibrator and between fixed side plates 8, 9, whereby their contents are consolidated and their sides flattened. Each mould comprises a base member 15 mounted on a saddle 19 and secured to the chain by bolts 20; a front member 14 integral with the base member; and a rear member 16 pivoted thereto by a hinge 17 so that it can swing through a small angle, determined by the engagement of a stop 18 with the base member, to open the mould for the reception of a bag. The saddle has downwardly-extending portions 22 straddling a beam 23 which is vibrated electrically or mechanically. With this arrangement, the moulds open automatically as they move upwardly around the sprocket of the chain. The rear member may, however, be fixed to the base member and the front member hinged thereto, in which case the latter is counterweighted to cause the moulds to open automatically. In an alternative construction, the base members are integral with the saddles and the front and rear members are detachable, one being secured to a fixed lug and the other to a pivoted lug. As the moulds pass on to the upper run of the chain, they are held closed by the engagement of spacers 24 on the front walls with the rear walls 16 of preceding moulds. Alternatively, the spacers may be provided on the rear walls. The conveyer chain is moved in steps equal to the spacing between adjacent moulds by a pedal 25 and rod 26 (Fig. 1, not shown) actuating a sprocket.
