Liquid, for example fuel entering at 12 passes inwardly through the axially-pleated wall of a resin-impregnated-paper filter element 30, through perforations 50 in a metal core 38 and out at 14. On backwashing, liquid passing outwardly through the paper causes each individual pleat to become slightly bulged between bands 52 cemented to the outside edges of the pleats to hold them straight and equally spaced from one another around the element at these places.
