Abstract

Perfluorocarbon compounds of the formula RFSO3X, where RF is a perfluorocarbon chain of 4 to 18 carbon atoms which contains no carbon-to-carbon unsaturation and which is straight, branched, or cyclic, and X is a cation such as hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium, alkaline earth metal, magnesium, zinc, copper, aluminium, rare earth metal (e.g. cerium), chromium, or nickel, are produced by hydrolysis of the sulphonyl fluoride prepared by electrolysis of an appropriate hydrocarbon sulphonyl chloride in liquid hydrogen fluoride.
