Abstract
756,518. Steering vehicles. DAIMLER BENZ AKT.-GES. Aug. 30, 1954 [Aug. 28, 1953], No. 25181/54. Class 79 (5). Each of a pair of independently suspended steering wheels is provided with a separately acting telescopic shock-absorber to resist rapid movement thereof, one end of which is connected to a non-steerable part of the vehicle and the other end of which is pivotally connected to a steerable part by a joint located between the wheel and the longitudinal central plane of the vehicle. As shown in Fig. 1, the wheels 11 are suspended by superimposed links 12, 13 and are steered through a three-part track rod 17, 18, 19 and steering arms 16, the drop arm 21 of the steering gear 22 being bell-cranked and supporting the rod parts 18, 19 and the parts 17, 18 being supported by a bell-crank lever 20. The bell-crank levers 20, 21 are each connected to an hydraulic shock-absorber 28 with its piston or cylinder connected to the vehicle frame 10. In a modification shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 a cylinder 26 secured to the vehicle frame has two pistons 28<SP>1</SP> connected to the levers 20, 21. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), each steering arm has a projection connected by the shock-absorber to a point on the vehicle frame. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), each wheel carrier is connected by the shockabsorber to a lower wheel suspension link.
