Abstract

In a tubeless tyre (see Group XXXIV) having a carcase of rubberized plies of separate or fabricized cords of twisted synthetic continuous filaments, loss of inflation air by "wicking" along the interstices between the filaments is prevented by impregnation of the cords with a rubber latex solution to fill the interstices at least in the outer peripheral region of <PICT:0754939/IV(c)/1> the cord. The impregnation may be effected by dipping the cords whilst in a relaxed state and subsequently tensioning them to compact the filaments. Preferred impregnants comprise mixtures of rubber latex with (1) a protein and/or (2) a soluble aldehyde resin, or (3) an aldehyde and a reactant capable of forming a resin therewith, and the degree of impregnation is considerably greater than that required for adhesion purposes. Fig. 3 shows applied to a two strand cord, how filaments 10 which may lie in the central unimpregnated part of the cord at one section, progress to lie, in the formation of the cord, in the impregnated outer periphery of the cord at nother section. This effects at least periodic damming of the interstices sufficient to prevent "wicking".
