Abstract
In a method of chemically polishing and brightening Zr and Zr-base alloys the metal is immersed in a mixture consisting of, by volume, 2-3 parts HNO3, 1-2 parts H2SO4, 1-2 parts HF and 4-5 parts water. Particularly useful is a mixture consisting of, by volume, 10-60 per cent, preferably 35 per cent, HNO3, 5-35 per cent, preferably 10 per cent, H2SO4, 7-30 per cent, preferably 15 per cent., HF and 20-50 per cent, preferably 40 per cent., water. The strengths of the acids used are respectively, by weight, 70 per cent., 95,5 per cent., and 48 per cent, and the solutions are best used in the temperature range of room temperature to 90 DEG C.
