In a joint of the kind in which a securing and sealing ring E is deformed to grip a pipe or rod T by compression between coupling members such as a fitting B and nut N, the ring comprises a main body 10 having an internal, frontal cutting edge 12, a front face 14 sloping rearwardly, at an angle of 75 to 80 degrees to the axis of the ring, and a conical surface 7 adapted to be engaged by the nut, and comprises also a forward extension 11 adapted to yield under pressure applied by the members B, N to permit inward radial and forward axial movement of the edge 12. The extension is one quarter as thick as the ring body 10 ; its thickened end 8 and the pipe abut the end surface 2 of the fitting B. The surface 7 is inclined to the joint axis at 45 degrees and the surface 6 of the nut at 10 to 20 degrees less. In a preferred form the rake of the face 14 is half the angle between the faces 6, 7. The surface 6 first engages the edge 3 of the ring, moving the edge 12 'forwards and inwards to dig into the pipe. The ring part 10 is then tilted, buckling the web 11, until the faces 6, 7 engage, and a short extension 17 of the ring is forced into the pipe. The mean length of the ring body 10 is equal to its thickness. The bore of the ring is surface hardened at 16. In a modified form of joint the pipe is preformed with a buttress-shaped groove 21, Fig. 4, to receive the edge 12. The thickened end of the web 11 has an internal flange 28 against which the pipe abuts. The surface 6 of the nut terminates in a rounded shoulder 23 which engages the outer extremity of the surface 7.
