Abstract

A polishing-type dentifrice contains a fluoride which normally dissociates in aqueous solution to yield fluoride ions, e.g. a fluoride of tin, sodium, zinc, copper potassium, lithium, chromium, strontium, ammonium; fluosilicates Na2SiF6; fluophosphates KPF6; fluoaluminates, fluotitanates, as well as mixed halides such as chlorofluorides, SnClF, and a calcium-containing polishing agent e.g. a calcium pyrophosphate, metaphosphate, polyphosphate, triphosphate, oxyapatite, a - and b -tricalcium orthophosphate, which may be formed by at least partial molecular dehydration by heat-treating orthophosphates at a temperature between 200 DEG C. and the fusion temperature, or mixed phosphates such as calcium sodium pyrophosphates. A toothpaste is described comprising 0,01 to 0,4 per cent fluoride, 10-40 per cent water, 10 to 40 per cent glycerine, and 20 to 60 per cent calcium-containing abrasive formed by removing at least 25 per cent of the molecular water content from an orthophosphate. p Sorbitol, glycols, silicones, glycerine, gum tragacanth, alginates, Irish moss, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, detergents, and flavourings may also be present.
