Abstract

744,167. Loud-speakers. TANNOY, Ltd. Nov. 11, 1953 [Nov. 19, 1952], No. 29256/52. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a horn-type loud-speaker the mouth lies on the surface of a right cylinder having a vertical axis, and is divided into axial sections 6, 12 and 20, each communicating with the corresponding one of the coaxial throats 3, 4 and 5 extending along the axis from a sound power unit 1, the throats being so designed that the sound waves emerging from the different sections are substantially of equal amplitude and in phase, so that the loudspeaker radiates sound mainly in a horizontal plane. As shown, the path lengths from the sound power unit 1 to the sections of the mouth nearer to that unit are increased by providing baffles such as 13, 21 so as to make the lengths of the paths to all sections equal. Two loud-speakers each constructed as shown may be arranged adjacent to, and coaxially with, each other to form a loud-speaker assembly, which is supported on the trunnions 35 in a U-shaped frame 36 so that the upper loud-speaker may readily be swung into the lower position for ease of access to its sound power unit for maintenance purposes. Instead of making the path lengths to the sections equal, it may be arranged that the paths are of such lengths that the phase difference between adjacent sections is constant, in which case the loudspeaker will emit sound mainly between the surfaces of two cones coaxial with the cylinder.
