Abstract

732,098. Self-equalizing slings for hoisting loads. FELCO HOISTS, Ltd. Dec. 16, 1953 [July 21, 1953], No. 34982/53. Class 78 (4). A rope 19, Fig. 1, is supported intermediate its ends to form two legs of a sling by a V-section groove in which it runs freely when not loaded but in which it jams when the load is applied. In the construction of Figs. 1 and 2 two ropes 19 are carried in corresponding grooves formed between the outer faces of a body 11 by which. the sling is suspended and inner faces 17 on part-circular wedge-plates 12, 13 secured by bolts, 14 to the body 11. A pair of rollers 28, Fig. 1, carried by a cross-head 32 sliding on a bolt 33 are urged upwardly by a spring 30 to move in slots and recesses cut in the frame 11 and in the plates 12, 13 to lift the ropes 19 out of wedging engagement with the grooves when the load is set down. The ropes 19 may be locked in the grooves by saddle members 26 pressed down on the ropes by bolts 22 carried by the frame 11. Alternatively holes 24 on the saddle members 26 may be threaded over the bolts 22 as shown, at the right-hand side of Fig. 1 so that the saddle members serve solely to prevent escape of the rope. The saddle members 26 may be replaced by members which pivot about horizontal bolts in the frame 11 between positions in which they hold the ropes captive and positions in which they jam the ropes, or by further weding members 20a, Fig. 5, sliding in notches 39 in the plates 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP> and drawn towards the frame 11<SP>1</SP> by bolts 42 to cause, wedging surfaces 40 to jam the ropes 191. In an alternative construction (not shown) a wedge plate is provided on one side only of the frame 11 to form a groove for a single rope and the rollers 28 are replaced by a spring- biased ball held captive by an inwardly projecting lug on the wedge plate.
