Abstract

In removing ammonia from water b) a cation exchange process with periodica regeneration, the ex change material is divided into two parts 1, successively traversed by the water and regeneration is carried out when the first part 1 ceases to be effective in removing the bulk of the ammonia, the regenerative solution being passed successively through the second and first parts of the material. If the second part is unduly charged with ammonia, a little of the regenerative solution is allowed to run to waste before the solution is passed through the first part. The direction of the regenerative flow may be the same as or opposite to the service flow, the flow being in both cases through the second part first. As shown in Fig. 1, the two parts are in separate chambers but all the material may be in one chamber, Fig. 4, and the parts separated by a distributer and collector 8 at the interface between the two parts ; in this case the regenerative solution from the second part is collected and stored to be passed through the first part on completion of the regeneration of the second part.
