Abstract

738,100. Writing-machines. POWERSSAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1954 [March 18, 1953], No. 7542/53. Class 146(3). An apparatus for defining characters on impression-receiving material, e.g. paper, comprises a platen, a plurality of styluses supported for independent movement lengthwise towards and away from the platen and in side-by-side relation in a line extending lengthwise of the platen, means to move the marking ends of all the styluses in two paths normal one to the other to determine the maximum height and width of a character, and means for applying discrete impulses to the styluses to effect lengthwise movements thereof to make character-defining marks on impression-receiving material disposed between the platen and marking ends of the styluses. As shown, the marking ends of a plurality of styluses, each comprising an inner flexible wire 1 and an outer member 2, are supported by a guide 11 reciprocable within a second reciprocating guide 10. The guide 11 is reciprocated in the guide 10 by a strap 25, Fig. 1, attached to an eccentric 26. The guide 10 is reciprocated along vertical posts 13 by a bellcrank lever 16 rocked by a cam 19, the cam 19 rotating approximately once for each eleven reciprocations of the guide 11. During the reciprocations, the wires 1 are actuated axially towards a platen 7 and stationary impression receiving material 8, Fig. 2, and a web 9 of transfer media, e.g. carbon paper so as to mark spots on the material 8. The wires are actuated by solenoids 6 energised through rotary discs 28, (Fig. 4, not shown), bearing contacts and operating in the manner described in Specification 707,736.
