Abstract

736,343. Thermionic valves. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 35295/53. Class 39 (1). In a thyratron in which a cylindrical cathode surrounded by a cylindrical screen is separated from a grid electrode having a central gridded portion by a screen electrode in the form of a disc having circumferentially disposed apertures near its edge, the cathode screen is provided with an outwardly flared conical prolongation and a centrally dis. posed plate which together form an electronoptical device for concentrating electrons emanating from the cathode in the apertures in the screen electrode. The tube shown comprises a disc-shaped nickel anode 15 supported from a conductor 16 having a glass coating 14<SP>1</SP> for a large part of its length and passing through a glass screening tube 14 to a metal cap 17. The cathode assembly 18 is supported by two wires 19 and 20 and comprises a cylinder 33 coated with a mixture of alkaline earth oxides heated by a filament helix 34 attached at one end to the cylinder 33 and connected at the other end to a contact pin 12. The cathode heat screen is constituted by two cylinders 35 and 36. Two circular plates 38 and 39 are welded together at their centres and are secured by a strip 37 to the cylinder 36 which is provided with a conical flared portion 36<SP>1</SP>. A grid cylinder 21 of sheet material is supported by wires 26 and 27 and is provided with a continuation in the form of a gauze cylinder 22 closed at its upper end by a plate 23 having a cylindrical extension 24 which is secured to the tube 14 by a clamp 25 having a tightening screw 25<SP>1</SP>. The grid electrode is formed by a plate 28 having a cylindrical edge 28<SP>1</SP> and a central aperture closed by a wire grid 29. Located below the grid electrode 28 is a-screening plate 30 provided with three circumferentially extending apertures 31. The flared portion 361 of the cylinder 36 and the plates 38 and 39 together form an electron-optical system concentrating the electrons emitted by the cathode in the apertures 31 in the grid screening plate 30. The tube is filled with hydrogen at a pressure of a few mm. of mercury.
