Abstract

723,809. Casting-machines. WESTBERG, C. M., and CLAXTON, S. H. May 6,1953 [May 6, 1952], No. 11464/52. Class 83 (1). In a method and machine for producing molten metal of a desired composition, a specimen of the metal is fed in the molten state on to a smooth-surfaced rapidly rotating disc 6 of good heat-conducting material, solidified strips of the metal are collected from the disc, and then the further treatment of the mass of molten metal is controlled in accordance with the analysis of the strips. The disc is preferably of copper or silver but may be of gold; molybdenum, tungsten, zinc or rhodium, depending upon the nature of the molten metal and the amount of the sample required. The metal is spun into thin ribbons which collect within a bowl 8. Nitrogen, hydrogen, or other inert gas may be admitted to the interior of the bowl.
