Abstract

723,675. Roofs. DOW-MAC (PRODUCTS), Ltd., DOWSETT, H. L., and SPENCER, C. A. Aug. 5, 1953 [May 5, 1952], No. 11297/52. Class 20 (4). A triangular, self-supporting roof section adapted to form with similar side-by-side sections the roof of a house comprises two sloping surfaces in the form, e.g., of precast concrete slabs 1, 2 which are constructed in one piece, or two or more pieces secured together, and are hinged together at 9 at the apex of the roof, their lower ends being joined by a tie member 3. The slabs 1, 2, have, on their undersides, one or more crossribs 6 and one or other odd number, of longitudinal ribs 5, the centre longitudinal rib 5 of each slab being bifurcated at its lower end to form a pocket 10 for the reception of'an end of a tie 3 which is secured therein by a pin 11. Additional ties 13 can be secured by pins 11 which pass through the ties and the outer ribs 5 of the two adjacent slabs. The lowermost cross-rib 6 and the lower ends of the ribs 5, are shaped to seat on top of a wall of the building, or preferably on top of a concrete capping beam 27, the outermost rib 5 having sockets 20 for the reception of locating dowels upstanding from the wall or beam 27. Gable end walls 25 each have a rib 26 on its upper sloping surfaces which fits between the longitudinal rib 5 on a gable end roof slab 22, and the outer rib 5 of the adjacent roof slab 1, or 2, the upper edges of these slabs being rebated to receive cover strips 18. The apex of the roof is covered by a member 28 made, e.g. of metal, or concrete. The slabs 1, 2 may be shaped to accommodate chimney stacks, roof-lights, &c. and the lower ends of the slabs may be shaped to form an integral gutter; alternatively a separate gutter may be provided. The ties 3 may be used to support a floor or a ceiling 29 of a lower room. Holes 14 are formed in the ribs 5 of the slabs to facilitate handling when the section is assembled, preferably with the aid of a jig in the form of one, or two, upstanding walls, or equivalent structures.
