Abstract
Hydroquinone is obtained by subjecting p-diisopropenylbenzene to treatment with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an electrophillic catalyst. Acetone is also formed. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent, e.g. acetic acid, at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. As electrophillic catalysts there may be used inorganic acids, e.g. sulphuric, perchloric, hydrohalic, fluoroboric and silicotungstic acids, earths that have been activated by acid treatment, and Friedel Crafts type catalysts, e.g. aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, boron fluoride and complexes of these latter substances with diethyl ether.
