A chain saw 5, for cutting saplings, sugar cane, sisal and the like, is fitted with a pivoted guide bar 16 having a handle 23 so that it can be moved with a scissors-like action to gather material to be cut and then direct and hold the material on to the saw. The bar is reinforced by a plate 20 and is mounted on a turntable member having a spigot 11 extending through a hole in the saw guide blade 3. A handle 19 is also provided at the outer end of the bar and its inner edge 21 is of notched, toothed or sinuous form and may be concave. The guide bar may be constituted by a second chain saw and both saws may be driven from a common source, such as a petrol engine 2 or a flexible shaft, at least one saw being driven for movement into the acute angle formed between the two saws. The saw may be mounted on wheels or on a turntable on a wheeled carriage and, particularly for cutting sisal, may have limited tilting movement so that it cuts somewhat upwardly as well as inwardly. In a modification, suitable for pruning trees, the saw is driven from a flexible shaft 28 through a gearbox 26 mounted on a tubular member 27 and the guide bar 16 is operated by a wire 33 and handle 34; two guide bars linked together may extend on each side of the saw.
