721,413. Extrusion machines for thermoplastics. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH. Sept. 30, 1952 [Dec. 21, 1951], No. 24504/52. Class 87 (2). An extrusion press having a horizontal screw 4 and a filling chamber 1 for feeding granular material to the screw, the chamber being connected to the screw housing 3, is characterized in that the wall 6 of the said chamber is shaped that at the place where the wall is near the downwardlymoving part of the screw the wall makes an angle, a, directed towards the filling opening, of at least 90 degrees with the tangential plane to the rib of the screw; and the wall 6 surrounds the said part of the screw, at least over its greatest part, at a distance which is not greater than the smallest dimension of the grains of thermoplastic material to be treated. The press may be adapted from an existing press by securing inserts (shown shaded' in Figs. 2 and 3) to the usual filling chamber. The angle alpha may be 120-140 degrees.
