Abstract

726,512. Pivoted sliding windows. ALBERS, W. Sept. 28, 1953 [Sept. 29, 1952], No. 26583/53. Class 20 (3). In windows of the kind having a sash which is pivotable about its central horizontal axis, means for holding the sash in closed position, means for moving it downwardly to open position, wherein a ventilation gap is formed between the top of the sash and the frame, and guides mounted on the pivots of the sash and adapted to move in slides fitted on the sides of the frame, the guides carry sealing members for sealing between the sash and the frame to prevent draughts. The window frame comprises an upper part 3, two side parts 4, each carrying a slide 10 and guide plate 11 separated by ribs 12 to form three guide tracks 13, and a bottom part 5 carrying a hand crank 2. The sash comprises a top part 6, two side parts 7, each carrying a pin 16 with end nuts fitted in a bearing 14 in a plate 15, and a bottom part 8, a glass pane 9 completing the sash. On each pin 17 a U-shaped guide member 18 is oscillatably mounted by means of bearing eyes 22 on lateral flanges 19 each side of the bearing 14, the plate 18 being cut away at 20 to form three tongues 21 adapted to slide in the guide tracks 13. The plate 18 is extended rearwardly by an inclined arm 24 and a vertical arm 25 comprising a packing element with the rear surface 23 of the plate 18. A U-shaped packing member 26 has a rear plate 27 by which it is secured to the side 4 of the window frame, the arm 25 engaging between the sides of the member 26 to seal the window. For double windows, as shown in Fig. 14, an additional sealing slide 58 is provided fitting loosely in a U-shaped guide 60 fixed to the frame and having a recess in which a nose 59 on the slide 58 engages. The sash is provided with an upper pressing element 61 and a catch 62 having a nose 63 to lift the slide 58 when the sash is raised. The slides and guides shown in Fig. 14 in the closed or up position of the window, interact to provide a ventilation gap 1, Fig. 3, in the open or down position. In Figs. 2 and 3, the raising and lowering device 2 on the lower part 5 of the window comprises a pin 32, on a hand lever 33 with knob or handle 34, joined to a crank web 35 having a projection 37 and a crank-pin 36, the crank-pin 36 acting in a slot 40 in a guide 38 secured to the lower part 8 of the sash, the whole lying within a box 42 let into the frame part 5 and the sash being guided laterally by rollers on the sides of the. guides 38 running on the side walls of the box. The crank-pin 36 is provided with a nose 44 and the slot 40 with a recess 41 and to swing open the sash about the pivot pins 16; the nose 44 is made to register with the recess 41 by turning the crank arm 33 about the pin 32 slightly in a clockwise direction. To shut the window, the sash being in the vertical position, the arm 33 is turned through 180 degrees in a counter-clockwise direction, the sash being pushed upwardly by the pin 36 until a bead 45 thereon engages in a groove 46 in the window frame part 3, the sash then resting on the projection 37, relieving the pin 36. An additional locking device comprises bolts on the sash sides 7 which engage cam races on plates fitted to the sides 4 of the frame, the cams being shaped so that in the closed and lowered positions, the sash bears tightly against the frame and moves away while being lowered or raised. For cleaning the window, the sash may be swung through 180 degrees, a catch 50 on the part 6 of the sash engaging a stop 51 on the knob 34. In Fig. 14, the raising and lowering device 2 on the lower part 5 of the window, intended for the extra heavy double sash window, comprises a similar crank, operated by a hand lever, both right and left of which is lined by an operating rod 52 to one arm of an elbow lever 53 pivoted at 54 to the frame 5, the other arm of lever 53 having a pin 55 engaging in a slot of a guide 56 fitted to the lower edge of the sash, there being one each side of the sash. On operation of the crank handle to close the window, the pins 55 press on the lower part 8 of the sash to raise it and in the closed position, bearing surfaces 57 on the arm of lever 53 carrying the pin 55 relieve the pressure on the pin. A rail 64 on the frame part 5 interengages with a similar rail 65 on the lower part 8 of the sash in the closed position of the window to constitute a packing and locking device.
