Abstract
725,224. Stencilling machines. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 1, 1953 [July 26, 1952], No. 15199/53. Class 100 (2). A machine for stencilling designs on articles, e.g. tablet indicators for cash registers &c., comprises a rotary table 28 adapted to support the articles and to bring them in turn under a vertically movable stencil frame 45 over which a squeegee 80 is arranged to .oscillate to effect the stencilling. The machine base 20 carries three rotatable spindles 21, 22, 23, driven synchronously by gears 24, 25, 26. On spindle 21 is a Geneva gear disc 35 having an upstanding pin adapted to engage notches formed in the edge of a plate 29 rotatably mounted with the table 28, on an axle 27. Holders for a number, e.g. twelve articles 144 are mounted round the periphery of the table and the Geneva gear advances each article in turn into printing position at each revolution of spindle 21. The stencil frame 45 is adjustably mounted in a bracket 57, 58, 59, Fig. 4, attached to the side of a cross-bar 46 adjustments being made by set screws 64, 65 and 66, 67. The cross-bar 46 is movably mounted on vertical pins 47 depending from a stationary cross-bar 48 and is urged downward by springs 51 to cause pins 52, 53, to bear on a cam disc 56 mounted on spindle 22. As this spindle rotates the stencil frame is moved to and from a position in contact with the articles for printing. The squeegee 80 is adjustably mounted on a plate 86 carried by a slider 87. The slider 87 is guided by a yoke 104 attached to the cross-bar 48 and at the rear end by a pin and slot connection 90 in a channelled member 92. A transverse slotted member 88 attached to slider 87 is engaged by a pin 97 eccentrically mounted on a disc 98 on spindle 23. As this spindle rotates the slider' 87 is reciprocated. An ink reservoir 70 is provided at one end of the stencil frame 45 and the squeegee is arranged to dip into the ink, to be lifted over the lip 72 and then to be carried to the other end of the screen before being lowered into contact therewith for the printing stroke. This vertical movement of the squeegee is effected by a cam disc 102 mounted on spindle 22 and acting through, pin 101 against the underside of slider 87. Spring-loaded plungers press the slider down on the pin 101. In operation, the squeegee is moved to the right-hand position as the imprinted article is moved into stencilling position and the screen is then lowered. The squeegee then makes the forward printing stroke, is lifted just before it reaches the lip 72 and is then lowered again into the ink. It is immediately raised again in readiness for the return stroke.
