Abstract

725,142. Printing processes. ATKINSON, R. B. March 5, 1952 [April 14, 1951], No. 5745/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group XL (b)] Images are reproduced by first forming a magnetic record of the image and then applying a material having magnetic properties to the record in such a manner as to cause the material to be selectively distributed in accordance with the magnetic pattern and thereby to reproduce the image visibly. The magnetic record material comprises a sheet of plastic coated with a magnetic material such as iron oxide, the record being built up by scanning the surface with a magnetic recording head, and the material for reproducing the image visibly comprises a magnetic powder, such as iron, carbonyl iron or iron oxide, which is either dusted over the magnetized sheet or mixed with oil and flown over the sheet, the oil being removed subsequently by a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride or gasolene. The magnetized sheet with its coating of powder may form the final reproduction, in which case the powder is selected to have a colour which contrasts with the sheet. Alternatively the powder may be transferred to another support, such as paper, by coating the paper with an adhesive in the form of gelatine or a sizing and pressing the paper into contact with the magnetized sheet. As a further alternative, the magnetic powder may be coated with a pigment which is transferred by pressing to a final support moistened with a solvent for the pigment. These last two processes permit the magnetic record to be used for repeated reproduction. Colour images are reproduced by combining a plurality of component colour reproductions. In the particular embodiment disclosed, the magnetic reproduction is produced from an original image by apparatus operating in a conventional manner to effect synchronous helical scanning of the original and the magnetic sheet. The original is scanned photo-electrically although the apparatus may also be arranged with a magnetic pick-up head in order to reproduce from magnetic records. It is stated that the recording part of the apparatus may be located at a distance from the image analyser. Specification 686,009, [Group XL (b)], is referred to.
