Abstract
A method of carbo-nitriding ferrous metal comprises the following steps:- (a) carbo-nitriding at a temperature between the Ae1 and Ae3 temperatures of the metal; (b) cooling to a temperature between the Ae1 temperature of the core and the Ae3 temperature of the carbo-nitrided layer; (c) maintaining at this temperature until the austenite of the core is converted to ferrite and cementite; (d) quenching to transform the carbo-nitrided layer to martensite. The carbo-nitriding may be carried out in an atmosphere consisting mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen with the addition of a hydrocarbon gas and ammonia or with the addition of acetonitrile only.
