Abstract

A coating composition giving on stoving a flexible film adherent to metal surfaces consists of an inert solvent, an ether containing more than one epoxy group per molecule and not more than 10 per cent. of one or more hydroxy polybasic acids as polymerization catalyst. Acids mentioned are diacetone alcohol and a mixture thereof with toluene. Suitable ethers are glycidyl ethers from epichlorhydrin and "bisphenol." Other film-forming ingredients may also be included in the compositions. In the examples (1) 7.5 per cent. citric acid was added to a 50 per cent. solution in diacetone alcohol of a resin from epichlorhydrin and bisphenol. Coated on tinplate or aluminium and stoved for 20 mins. at 375 DEG F. it gave an adherent, flexible, chemically resistant film. (2) 5 per cent. of tartaric acid was added to a similar resin dissolved in a mixture of toluene and diacetone alcohol.
