710,897. Piston rings. ISLER, F. Dec. 27, 1951 [Dec. 28. 1950], No. 30183/51. Class 122(1) [Also in Group XXII] In a method of turning piston rings of heart- or pear-shape on a copying lathe by means of a copying-cam which is prepared from a template and of a shape to turn a piston ring having equal pressure over its whole periphery on compression, mechanism is employed which changes the effect of the copying cam to give the ring a reduced or increased pressure at the ends when the ring is split and compressed. The template is produced by first turning concentrically a cast piston ring of split form while its tongued-and-grooved ends are pinned together by a pin, and thereafter spreading the ends and pinning them together by a second pin. This template is used in a copying lathe to produce a cam of negative configuration which is then mounted in a further copying lathe having an adjustable depth-of-cut and copying mechanism as described in Specification 710,887, [Group XXII], to produce desired heart- or pear-shape rings as shown in Figs. 9 and 10 according to the setting of this mechanism.
