Class 122(1) [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] In a fuel-injection pump, the pump cylinder 16b is attached to an operating piston 16a actuated by the compression pressure in the engine cylinder. A second piston 17 is slidable on the cylinder 16b and is engaged by a third piston 18 loaded by a spring 48. The piston 16a may be provided with sealing rings and the space 56 between the pistons 16a and 17 forms a liquid seal which. by the differential action of piston 16a, is always maintained at a pressure higher than that in the engine cylinder. During intervals between the injections, liquid under pressure flows from the inlet 37 through passages 35 to lift the valve 44 against the spring 45 and maintain the space 56 full of liquid and also cause circulation to the outlet 38 to cool the piston.
