Abstract

717,121. Helmets. GEORGE, W. A. Feb. 26, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4678/51. Class 63 A protective helmet comprises two separate resilient domed shells 6, 7 of non- metallic hard flexible sheet material disposed one within the other and joined around their edges but spaced by a maximum at the top of the helmet. The shells may be of vulcanized fibre sheet, a thermoplastic material such as rigid polyvinyl chloride sheet or a thermosetting plastic sheet material. The edge of one shell 8, which may be gimped at 8a, may be turned over the edge of the other shell and the parts then secured together, with, if provided, the edge of an internal cap 9, by adhesive and or stitching. Various modified shapes of helmet are described and the two shells may be connected by rivets. The joint may be made air-tight by a sealing compound so that trapped air acts as a resilient cushion. The space between the shells may be filled with resilient material 13, preferably cellular. such as honeycomb paper mesh bonded with synthetic resin.
