Abstract

715,575. Fuel injection pumps; reciprocating compressors. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES., and WILLE, R. July 23, 1952 [July 26, 1951], No. 19076/62. Classes 8 (1) and 102 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] In a fuel injection unit for an internalcombustion engine comprising an injector nozzle 67, a fuel pump 21, and an air compressor 68 supplying injection air, the fuel injection valve 28 is directly actuated mechanically by the fuel pump piston 15, which piston also operates the air compressor piston 58. During the delivery stroke of the pump piston 15 the delivery pressure in the space 22 forces the compressor piston 58 to the left and compressed air is forced through a passage 64 in the piston and a passage 65 to space 45 in communication with the injection orifice through passages 46 and with a space 81 to which fuel is later admitted. At the end of the stroke of the compressor piston, a cam surface 83 on the fuel pump piston 15 contacts the end of the valve stem carrying a ball bearing 85 and opens the valve, when fuel from the space 22 is forced through a non- return valve 24 and passage 82 to the space 81 where it mixes with the compressed air and flows through orifices 80 into a passage 32 in the valve stem from which it escapes through orifices 35 into the compressed air streams flowing through the passages 46 and is injected through the orifice 30. In a modification the axes of the fuel pump piston, and compressor piston are arranged at right angles to one another.
