Abstract

Ferrous surfaces are treated with a solution of a phosphate of an alkali metal, ammonium or an organic base, at pH of 4.2-5.8, the solution also containing a chlorate in a concentration not exceeding 4 per cent. Phosphates of sodium, potassium, triethanolamine, guanylurea and pyridine may be used. A temperature exceeding 140 DEG F. is preferably maintained. A small amount of metal accelerator, wetting agents or thickening agents may be present. After treatment, the coating may be rinsed with a solution of chromic acid, phosphoric acid, or both, or hexavalent chromium. Specifications 386,739 and 517,049 are referred to.
