Abstract
701,670. Belt and chain gearing; removing shafts. BOURDON TOOLS, Ltd. May 16, 1952 [Jan. 9, 1952], No. 741/52. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2) In a grinding or like machine wherein a toolcarrying spindle 9 is driven by a belt (or chain) 54 engaging a pulley (or sprocket) 41 on the spindle, the pulley 41 rotates on fixed bearings 46, 47 in a housing 1 while the spindle 9, which has bearings 7, 8, 21 in the housing, is slidably keyed in the pulley so that, after removing screws 3, the spindle and lower bearing unit may be lowered to allow removal or replacement of the belt 54. The arrangement also ensures that the load of the belt tension is not transmitted to the spindle and that the main bearings, 7, 8 of the latter are readily accessible. The housing 1 is vertically slidable on a column (not shown) containing the driving pulley and motor, and has a detachable closure plate 2 carrying the lower bearing housing 4. A flanged collar 10 on the spindle 9 prevents oil leakage, and the grinding wheel may be flxed to the collar or to an extension of the spindle. Preferably the grinding wheel head and the plate 2 are formed as in Specification 696,198, [Group XXII], to provide liquid coolant or lubricant to the grinding wheel. The bearings 7, 8 are clamped between upper and lower cover plates (the upper plate not being shown) and spacing sleeves, and are adjusted by a nut 17 locked by a grub screw and circlip. The rollers of the upper bearing 21 are held in a cage and remain in the fixed outer race when the spindle 9 is lowered. The pulley 41 has a boss 52 engaging the inner races of the two bearings 46, 47, the outer races being fixed to a housing partition 42. When the spindle has been lowered and a cap 39 removed a belt may be threaded downwardly through the bearing 21, or, if the spindle is withdrawn entirely, upwardly through the pulley boss 52. Alternatively an opening 57 in the housing 1 may be provided. Lubricating nipples 63, 66, 72 and corresponding passages are provided for the bearings. In a modification the rollers and inner races of the bearing 21 are lowered with the spindle leaving the outer race fixed, and a collar on the spindle, similar to the collar 10, closes the underside of the bearing. In a further modification the bearing 21 is a ball bearing and the whole bearing is lowered with the spindle 9, the outer race being slidable in its mounting.
