Abstract

In the production of acrylonitrile from acetylene and hydrocyanic acid in aqueous solution the gaseous mixture leaving the reaction chamber is washed with neutral organic liquid in which acrylonitrile and the by-products formed are soluble, which boils at at least 60 DEG C. and does not react with the components contained in the gas mixture nor impairs the formation of acrylonitrile in the reaction chamber. The residual gas being purified acetylene may be recycled to the reaction chamber. The washing liquor containing acrylonitrile and such by-products as mono-and di-vinyl acetylene, lactic acid nitrile and acetaldehyde and any unchanged hydrogen cyanide is then subjected to fractional distillation to recover the components therefrom. Specified washing liquids are aliphatic and cyclic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, ethers, acetals, nitriles and inert heterocyclic substances such as petroleum products, paraffin oil, toluene, xylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, octanol, decanol, benzyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, trichlorethylene, tetrachlorethane, hexachlorbutane, chlorbenzene, butyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, ethylene glycol acetate, monomethyl ethylene glycol ether, dioctyl ether, dibenzyl acetaldehyde butyl or octyl acetal, acrylonitrile, acetonitrile, propionitrile, lactonitrile, benzonitrile, tetrahydrofurane, g -butyrolactone and g -butyrolactam. The washing is preferably effected at between 0 DEG and 30 DEG C., the gas mixture leaving the chamber being cooled to room temperature prior to washing. When the washing liquids are water-soluble, the washed gases are preferably given a second wash with water to remove traces of the organic wash liquid. The washing may be effected in a packed tower, if desired under p increase pressure. Examples are given wherein acetylene and hydrogen cyanide are reacted in aqueous cuprous chloride solution.
