Abstract

A process for the recovery of oil from clay that has been used in the clay treatment of lubricating oils and which contains entrained oil comprises contacting the used clay &c. with an extract obtained from the solvent refining of a mineral oil fraction to extract the entrained oil from the used clay and recovering the extracted oil from the solution of oil in the extract. Clays &c., such as bentonite, fullers earths, magnesite, bauxite and alumina, which contain entrained oil after treatment of lubricating oils, may be agitated with the extract resulting from the refining of lubricating oil with a solvent, such as liquid sulphur dioxide, furfural, phenol, dichloroethyl ether and nitrobenzene. If phenol or furfural has been used the extract may be used directly, but a sulphur dioxide extract should preferably be stripped of solvent before use. The extract is preferably the aromatic extract from kerosine, but extracts from lubricating oils and gas oil may be used. The clay may be removed by settling, filtration or centrifuging and reactivated or discarded, and the oil plus solvent may be distilled, the lubricating oil being removed as a distillate side stream or as a bottoms product. Fractions of the extract may also be removed. The clay/solvent extract mixture may also be distilled, the clay being removed as a slurry in the bottoms. A "chaser" may be included in the feed to the distillation stage to give a greater yield of lubricating oil.
