Class 38(5) A relay with delayed 'release' but a quick ' operation' has short-circuited elements such as a copper bar C for delaying the decay of flux and a magnetic shunt consisting of two ferro-magnetic springs S1, S2 placed between the bar C and the coils B1, B2. When the armature A is attracted, since to start with the gap between it and the pole pieces P1, P2 is at a maximum, the flux is weak and some passes through the magnetic shunt Sl, S2 without being influenced by the bar C. A rapid attraction is therefore the result. The reluctance of the magnetic shunt may be varied by separating the springs S1, S2 a variable amount by a non-magnetic hexagonal nut D. In a modification the springs S1, S2 extend close to the armature.
