Classes 69 (2) and 135 A device for the remote control of mechanism comprises two or more pistons in a common cylinder with a working space at one side of each piston, one of said pistons being connected to the mechanism to be controlled and said working spaces each communicating with a separate inlet for pressure fluid, whereby each piston may be operated separately or in combination with one or more of the other pistons to thereby provide a number of different and defined control positions. As shown, the device has pistons 1, 2, 3 in a common cylinder 4, piston 3 being connected by a rod 8 to the mechanism to be controlled. A stem 1a of piston 1 slides in a partition 6 and carries a stop member 1b for engagement with the partition 6. A stem 2a of piston 2 slides within the stem 1a and has grooves 2e and carries a stop member 2b for engagement with the end of rod 1a. A stem 3a of piston 3 slides within stem 2a and has a stop member 3b for engagement with a shoulder 2f in the rod 2a. Pressure fluid may be applied to the space 1c at the rear of piston 1 through connection 1d to the space 2c at the rear of piston 2 through connection 2d and grooves 2e in rod rod 2a and to the space 3c at the rear of piston 2 through connection 2d and grooves 2e in rod 2a, and to the space 3c at the rear of piston 3 through connection 3d, bore 7b and the hollow rods of pistons 2 and 3. A spring 10 urges the pistons against the pressure fluid. The strokes of the pistons as controlled by the stop members, may be such that that of piston 2 is twice and that of piston 4 four times the stroke of piston 1. Thus, by applying no pressure fluid to the spaces or applying pressure fluid to the spaces as follows : spaces 1c or 2c, 1c and 2c, 3c, 1c and 3c, 2c and 3c, 1c and 2c, and 3c, the pistons provide the rod 8 with eight equally spaced control positions. The admission of pressure fluid may be controlled from a remote point, or electromagnetically-operated valves may be fitted adjacent the device and controlled remotely.
