Abstract
693,423. Bridges; hangars; beams; floors. HAMILTON, A. M. Sept. 7, 1949 [Sept. 13, 1948], No. 24011/48. Classes 20(i), 20(ii) and 20(iv) Bridges or bridge-like structures such as hangers which extend across a considerable free span comprise a hollow tubular shell of rigid material filled with gas under pressure e.g. hydrogen or helium. The shell may be metal and may be reinforced by longitudinal or circumferential wire winding which may cause initial compression in the shell. The longitudinal wire may be secured by circumferential wire 78, Fig. 18, and at both ends by welding &c. into a ring 77. The whole may be welded, metal sprayed &c. The wire may be woven into a mesh. The tubular element may be formed from rivetted or welded helical strip. The shell may comprise a number of sections fitted end to end. The shell may be lined with rubber. Pressure may be maintained by pumps, chemical action, a reservoir or a volatile liquid. Fig. 1 shows a bridge comprising two curved tubular beams 13 from which the deck 16 is suspended by cables 17. The beams may be built section by section having interfitting hemispherical ends by a crane moving on the already constructed part and longitudinal wiring attached as the work proceeds. Modified bridges comprise a single tube supporting a footway or a road externally and a roadway internally. A further modification comprises a number of tubes arranged side by side diminishing in diameter from the centre. In a suspension bridge dual towers are connected by bracing and have deck girders formed of the gas-filled shells and the gas may be helium or hydrogen. A bridge may be launched with the aid of the reaction of a downwardly directed high velocity gas jet. Floors of bridges are constructed of two sheets 66 of corrugated metal, Fig. 15, secured by bolts on clamping bars at 67 to form a series of cylinders 65 which are charged with gas under pressure. The sheets may have wire mesh reinforcement. The whole may be covered with concrete 70 bonded to the bolts 67. Hangars are formed of ribs 60, Fig. 13. and purlins 63 formed of the gas-filled shells. The Provisional Specification describes the invention applied to beams which may be thickened at places of stress and may be of plastic sheets joined by solvents.
