Abstract

A composition suitable for use as an adhesive for metals, wood, plastics, cloth and for bonding magnetic cores comprises a mixture of (1) 1-20 parts of a reactive resin obtained by reacting anhydrous formaldehyde with 1,3-dihydroxybenzene as described in Specifications 597,144 and 590,622; (2) 20-1 part of an ethoxylin resin obtained by reacting 1 mol. of a dihydric phenol and from 1-2 mols. of a halohydrin in an alkaline medium; (3) a catalyst comprising an alkaline hydroxide, alkaline phenoxide, a primary polyamino compound or the aldehyde reaction product thereof, the catalyst being added in sufficient quantity to bring the pH of the composition to at least 7. Examples are given in the Specification of the preparation of the resinous products (1) and (2) and an example of the compositions employed is (example 11) 10 parts ethoxylin resin, 1 part 60 per cent solution of a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, 0.4 parts NaOH solution comprising 1 part NaOH and 2 parts water. The composition may also contain fillers, e.g. mica, wood flour, walnut shell flour, iron oxide, or silica flour.
