Class 46 A filter of the type comprising one or more stacks of plates between the faces of which the liquid to be filtered is passed is characterized by the fact that the plates are each formed of two substantially identical halves with their filtering edges actually greater in peripheral length than their overall linear dimension, whereby the' actual filtering surface area of each stack is greater than its overall area. In a filter press provided' with plate-members each consisting of a stack 2, Fig. 1, of long narrow plates having aligned apertures 3 and compressed by-screws 5, acting through a bar 6 in a rectangular framework 4, each plate may comprise two castellated halves 12 abutting at their ends as shown in Fig. 3. More economically, the half-plates 13 may be cut from a sheet Fig. 5 and assembled in pairs as shown in Fig. 4. Where they abut additional holes 17 or recesses 18 may be provided. The .ends 16 of 'plates of the type shown in Figs. 3 or 4 are fitted into grooves in the vertical limbs 15 of the frame 4 in known manner when forming the stack. The plates may be formed with ribs or indentations of exact dimensions for spacing their surfaces apart. Also they may be corrugated to increase their length in comparison with the width of a complete plate member.
