Abstract

697,797. Bearings. LANCASHIRE DYNAMO HOLDINGS, Ltd., and WOOSEY, E. July 25, 1951 [July 31, 1950], No. 19099/50. Class 12 (i). An annular plate 4 having a hole 11, and openings 12-15 pressed out from the plate and providing lugs 16-19, is clamped by an end cap 6 against an anti-friction bearing so that the hole 11 is at the bottom of the bearing. Oil is then put into the casing until a level 20 is reached. In operation, when the shaft is first revolved, the bearing drags the oil through the hole 11 from the right-hand side of the partition and lowers the oil level on that side. When the speed increases oil is carried by the bearing up to and through the lower opening 12 or 13, depending upon the direction of rotation. At higher speeds the opening 15 or 14 comes into use, until the extraction of oil from the bearing lowers the oil level on the left-hand side of the partition to a sufficient fraction of the starting level. The deflector blades or lugs may be bent either inwardly and upwardly or outwardly and downwardly. In a modification, a similar partition and reservoir is employed on the left-hand side of the bearing, the reservoirs being in communication with one another.
