Abstract
697,542. Fuel-injection pumps. C.A.V., Ltd. May 21, 1952 [May 23, 1951], No. 12035/51. Class 102 (i). In a variable delivery liquid fuel pump of the kind comprising a single reciprocatory plunger which has combined with it a slidable sleeve for controlling a spill port in the plunger and which is rotatable about its longitudinal axis for effecting communication of a delivery port in the plunger with each in turn of a plurality of outlet passages, the plunger is stepped and its smaller part extends through the closed end of the pumping chamber, the sleeve of which controls the spill port, being mounted on the outer end of the smaller part of the plunger. A plunger comprises a main part h, Fig. 1, its end working in a pumping chamber e, and a smaller part i extending into a fuel entrance chamber b. An axial bore j in the plunger connects a spill port o and groove p, and an outlet port t and groove u, with an inlet port m. The plunger is reciprocated by a multi-lobe cam 4 and is rotated by gear-wheels 5. A spill port sleeve q is adjustable by a manually or automatically operable lever r. In the modification of Fig. 2 the spillage control sleeve q is in the form of a piston sliding in a cylinder 8, the lower end of which constitutes the fuel entrance chamber b, and the two ends of which are connected by a throttled port 12 and passage 11. An annular groove 15 in the bore of the sleeve communicates by a passage 16 with the upper end of the cylinder 8, permitting spillage from p during each working stroke. The rate of outflow to the lower end of the cylinder depends on the adjustment of the throttle 13 at any given rate of working. At a higher rate of working liquid pressure builds up in the upper part of the cylinder and moves the piston q downwardly against the action of a spring 9, this movement causing the grooves p and 15 to come into conjunction at an earlier part of the working stroke of the plunger, thus reducing the fuel discharged to the engine along the passages k and thus automatically controlling the supply of fuel to the engine in response to the speed.
